School of Music Tour For Local Students

During the Madeira Park School’s Arts Week the music society invited the students to tour the School of Music. They were guided through four ‘stations’ where they enthusiastically learned about the uses of the building and musical events and activities suited to kids.

They learned about staging a show (sound and lights), choral singing, how a piano works, piano and voice lessons, Family Music Nights, and were treated to a short concert by a favourite local singer, Mark Brezer.

The Cat Came Back…..

“Fred Penner Fred Penner delighted the young and the “young at heart” at two concerts on Saturday, Nov 23.

How do you keep 80+ little kids entertained for an hour and at the same time bring their parents and grandparents to the point of nostalgic tears – just ask the legendary Fred Penner. Yes, that Fred Penner – the one with whom we sang and danced for years in our living rooms via his not to be missed TV show. From the moment he stepped on stage at the Pender Harbour School of Music, we were all back in front of our TV’s and the words and music to Sandwiches, The Itsy Bitsy Spider and, of course, The Cat Came Back, miraculously reappeared on our tongues. With his strong baritone voice and delightful vocal and guitar backup from long-time collaborator Paul McNeil, Penner had his diverse and often wiggly audience with him all the way. What was obvious throughout is that Fred Penner clearly loves and respects his young audience and the adults who bring their children and grandchildren to experience his gentle magic. Sincere thanks to the Rotary Club of Pender Harbour, the Community School and individual sponsors who invited Mr. Penner to visit here for the first time. We all hope The Cat comes back to see us very soon.

SoM Coffee House

The School of Music, set up cabaret-style, was the scene of a wonderfully eclectic musical evening on Friday, July 13! The audience was treated to ‘smooth’ vocal offerings by SASSPenders, followed by two lively sets of well-known and original country tunes by Skinny Jimmy on guitar with Kent Morgan on bass. Baroque and Blue quartet closed with a wonderfully skilled and diverse set, including classical and jazz pieces.

What could be better on a Harbour evening than terrific local musicians staged in our waterfront venue, with Trish’s fresh-brewed coffee and tea and sumptuous desserts?

Plan to take in the next one – Friday, August 10th with the following line-up of performers:

  • Brett Wildemann – guitar and vocals
  • Ken Johnson – piano
  • Katherine Rowlands – guitar and vocals (soprano)
  • Jena Crozier- jazz vocals (alto) w. piano
