Matthew Byrne is not only a singer with a truly beautiful voice. He’s also a story teller, who on Sunday afternoon at the School of Music gave us the stories in the songs and the stories behind the songs. He collects traditional songs from Newfoundland and also from England, Ireland, and the US East Coast and brings them to his audience with joy and humour. Accompanying himself on guitar sometimes and sometimes not, he brought us songs of work (fishing, logging, and whaling) and also songs of love, including one (Adelaide) which left not a dry eye in the house. Encouraged by Matthew to join him on some of the choruses, the audience created a beautiful sound themselves, almost as if they wanted to say thank you for such a great afternoon!
