A consummate church musician, David Poon is sought after as an organist, continuo player, and liturgical musician. He has performed with the UBC Symphony Orchestra, the West Coast Symphony Orchestra, and numerous choirs in the Lower Mainland and on the Sunshine Coast. He studied organ under Denis Bédard; harpsichord with Jacques Ogg and Doreen Oke; and improvisation with Thierry Escaich, Olivier Latry, and Pierre Pincemaille.
David studied Gregorian chant and choral polyphony with Wilko Brouwers, William Mahrt and Scott Turkington; and he currently cantors, directs choirs, and plays organ for various churches around Vancouver. With an intimate understanding of early music, he seamlessly integrates centuries-old melodies with extemporised harmonies both for church services and in concert, creating vivid and dramatic musical experiences.
Artistic Director for the Baranduin Ensemble, founder of MOTET, organist for Oculus Chamber Choir, accompanist for Pender Harbour Community Choir, and assistant music director at St. John’s Vancouver, David spends his remaining time transcribing video game music, playing viol with his wife Sarah, and listening to his two sons compose contrafacta. He resides in Gibsons.
