The Pender Harbour Jazz Festival’s Jazz ‘Icon Series’ continues with our Headliner for 2015, Louis Hayes and the Cannonball Legacy Band. Hayes has been keeping time for jazz legends since his teens in Detroit. Starting with Yusef Lateef, Hayes has played and recorded with Horace Silver, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Oscar Peterson, Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon, McCoy Tyner and many others. He began playing with The Cannonball Adderley Band in 1959, and continued with them until 1965. The sound of the Legacy Band, inaugurated by Hayes in 2000, follows the Cannonball soulful/ bluesy/hard bop style, alternating breezy cool riffs with snappy in your face hard bop. The Cannonball Legacy band is Louis Hayes, drums; Dezron Douglas, bass; Rick Germanson, piano; Vincent Herring, alto sax and Jeremy Pelt, trumpet.

“Somewhere up in jazz heaven Julian and Nat (Adderley) have got to be pleased that their drummer, Louis Hayes, has done them proud.” Jeff Krow, Audiophile Audition, 2006

Latecomers will be seated at intermission. A smoke & fragrance-free event.

JAMES DANDERFER’S THE HUMMINGBIRD BRIGADE

12:30pm—2:30PM

Our Big Band this year gives us a “contemporary take on New Orleans Brass Band Tradition that mixes Soul, Funk and Jazz into a Delicious Gumbo.” J. Danderfer, CBC Radio One. New Orleans, Louisiana has been a melting pot of musical styles since the early 20th century when the forces of improvisation and the blues, ragtime and Afro-Caribbean rhythms all coalesced into America’s first great indigenous art form: Jazz. The New Orleans brass band is an important and vibrant part of this tradition, continuing to mix contemporary styles of jazz, funk, Afro-beat and Latin American music. Performing a mix of traditional New Orleans marches, funky contemporary brass band covers and inspired originals by Danderfer, the 17 piece Hummingbird Brigade is a powerhouse ensemble populated with the who’s who of B.C. Jazz musicians.
