Born in 1936, headliner Harold Mabern has played and recorded with many of the greats, including Sonny Rollins, Cannonball Adderly, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughn and Lionel Hampton, to name a few. He started with hard be-bop but found he had to play blues just to make a living. After begrudging the time blues took away from his jazz, Mabern realized it brought a special kind of joy and improvisational skill. In fact, he calls himself a “blues pianist who understands jazz.” Considered one of jazz’s most enduring and dazzling pianists, Mabern will be preaching the gospel of jazz. Mabern brings from New York Joe Farnsworth, drums and John Webber, bass, accompanied by Vancouver’s Cory Weeds on tenor sax.

Pender Harbour Jazz Festival favourite Cory Weeds is a jazz saxophonist, club owner, record label owner and Vancouver’s hub of all things jazz locally, nationally and internationally. He has been playing for 15 years with greats like Dr. Lonnie Smith, Brad Turner, Oliver Gannon and others, has his own quartet, and plays with The Nightcrawlers in both its small and Big Band incarnations, the latter on the P.H. Jazz Festival stage in 2011. Weeds was responsible for bringing (and playing with) NYC jazz heavyweights Jim Rotondi and Ian Hendrickson Smith to past Pender Harbour Jazz Festivals, and we are thrilled he is bringing (and playing with) Harold Mabern as our headliner for 2013. Thank you Cory!

DAL RICHARDS ORCHESTRA

12:30 pm – 2:15 pm

Vancouver icon Dal Richards and his Orchestra will open the Saturday Jazzapalooza! Dal, now in his 79th year of performing, will bring his 10 piece orchestra to Swing out the opening sets with all the greats of the Big Band era of the 30’s and 40’s. 95 years young, Dal began his career at the age of 8, playing piano to ward off the depression he was feeling from losing an eye to a slingshot accident. The rest really is history. Many of us remember our first time hearing Dal – at the PNE, Nat Bailey Stadium, New Year’s Eve. What has made his music so enduring is how he truly connects to his audience. We are thrilled to have him at the Festival.

Covering the American Songbook from Cole Porter to Nina Simone to Levon Helm, and more, Perlman will deliver delicious shivers with her band, Andrean Farrugia, piano, Ross McIntyre, bass and Jeff Halischuk, drums.
