We are delighted to be able to bring in a jazz icon for the second year in a row to headline the Festival at the School of Music. The George Cables Trio will be in the house. Born in New York City in 1944, Cables was classically trained on the piano as a youth – then he discovered jazz. A 1969 tour with Sonny Rollins took Cables to the West Coast. Collaborations and recordings followed with tenor saxophonists Joe Henderson and Sonny Rollins (“Next Album”), trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw (“Blackstone Legacy”), and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. Dexter Gordon invited Cables into his quartet in 1977. The years he spent with Gordon ignited Cables’ passion for the acoustic piano and re-immersed him in the Bebop vocabulary. The longest standing relationship Cables developed in the late seventies was with alto saxophonist Art Pepper. Cables has performed and recorded with some of the greatest jazz musicians of our time, including Joe Henderson, Roy Haynes, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Williams, Bobby Hutcherson and Dizzy Gillespie. A lyrical, sweet and strong sound is Cables’ trademark. George Cables brings drummer Victor Lewis from NYC and they are joined by Adam Thomas on bass. We are thrilled to have them on our stage. Master of Ceremonies is Cory Weeds.

WIL CAMPA Y SU ORQUESTRA

12:30pm—1:15pm & 1:30-2:15pm

This is the Big Band that almost blew out the walls of the Community Hall with their energetic, hot Latin Jazz in 2010. Wil Campa y su Orquestra opens our Jazzapalooza with 2 sets on Saturday, September 20, and we are very, very happy. Campa is a fabulous ambassador of salsa y son (soul). He has played in over 30 countries and shared the stage with greats such as Wynton Marsalis, Poncho Sanchez, Natalie Cole, Joe Lovano and Giovani Hildago. Campa’s voice is sultry, engaging, and always charismatic. With trumpets, trombones, keyboards, drums, congas, timbales, bass, son and passion, Wil Campa y su Orquestra will bring the most reluctant to their feet in sheer joy. Latin Jazz at its best.

LAURA CREMA QUARTET

2:30pm-3:15pm

CBC radio summed it up best: ‘Laura Crema’s sultry vocals pull you deep into the dark smoky room of some 40’s speakeasy where torch songs spoke volumes from the heart.’ Crema’s recording “Spring is Here,” released by Maximum Jazz/EMI Canada was named ‘Vocal Jazz Recording of 2007’ by James Hale, (Downbeat, Coda) in the Village Voice. Her latest recording, ‘Fotographia,’ was produced by Vancouver’s Brad Turner. Crema’s voice is silk and fire combined, and her phrasing reveals new aspects of songs that will inform and surprise. Ageless, dark, intimate, her singing will take you places you didn’t know existed.

PK3

3:30pm-4:15pm

Elegant, sophisticated, professional, the sound of this trio is based on the great feel and arrangements inspired by such legends as Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal and Harry Connick Jr. Co- leader and drummer Kristian Braathen grew up on the Sunshine Coast. He studied with Scott Robertson, Dave Robbins and Scott Hamilton among others. Pianist and co-leader Paul Miyai began with classical training and found jazz with Brad Turner, Ross Taggart and Miles Black at Capilano College. Bassist Jodi Proznick, winner of the National Jazz Award for Bassist of the year (‘08 & ’09) rounds out PK3 with her passionate and innovative playing.

DAN BRUBECK QUARTET

1:30pm-2:15pm & 2:30pm-3:15pm

For many years Dan Brubeck, son of jazz icon Dave Brubeck, has wanted to put together a musical tribute that honored both his father’s compositions and his mother’s lyrics. It is a little known fact that there was a creative partnership between Dave & Iola Brubeck, his wife of 71 years. Iola’s lyrics have been performed by such greats as Louis Armstrong, Carmen McRea, Diane Schuur and more. But Dave Brubeck’s music was largely recorded and performed in an instrumental format, and the lyrics that Dan’s mother, Iola, wrote have remained a lost treasure, until now. Dan has brought this material together in the way that it was originally envisioned – and was delighted to bring this band to the task. It takes 2 sets for us to truly benefit from the family musical story, so that’s just what we gave him. Dan Brubeck’s fabulous jazz quartet features Dan on drums, Adam Thomas on vocals and bass, Steve Kaldestad on sax and Tony Foster on piano.

ARNTZENS: THREE GENERATIONS OF JAZZ

3:30pm-4:15pm

There is, it’s true, a bit of ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ irony to the Three Generations of Jazz, the act that joins the three Arntzens in a celebration of vintage jazz. In reality it’s a formalization, Tom says, of a musical melding of grandfather, father and son that’s been going on at family gatherings for years. “We have a tradition of performing that music with my dad, at family gatherings. As far back as I can remember, right from the very beginning, Dad was playing this music in our living room, rehearsing his bands.” Granddad Lloyd plays clarinet, son Tom plays piano, and grandson Arnt (Jeffrey) Arntzen plays banjo and guitar. Lloyd’s love of Sidney Bichet, Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong shine through this amazing family band. And do they swing?? “Like a Louisville Slugger!”
